Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by neighbours Espanyol in a bitty Catalan derby. This
was the first of three meetings in ten days between the two sides, who
reconvene on Wednesday for the first leg of their Copa del Rey clash.
And Luis Enrique suggested that his priority is La Liga by playing his strongest possible side for this league outing.
A fraught and feisty first half saw Barca frustrated, but while the
European champions will consider themselves unlucky not to have taken
the lead through Lionel Messi ’s free kick - which hit the crossbar - Espanyol also went close from a corner.
Luis Suarez hit the post from close range after the break but the
visitors found themselves unable to find a breakthrough against a side
who
were beaten 6-0 in this very stadium by Real Madrid earlier this season.
